Unlocking learning during lockdown

I was stranded outside my place of work when the lockdown started and had to seek temporary accommodation at a relative’s home. This was a remote rural area on the outskirts of Baghpat. During some community gatherings (with social distancing of course), I happened to interact with college students and worried parents and realized that they did not have awareness and clarity about what life after college would look like. The ‘soon to be graduates’ were not confident about landing jobs owing to lack of access to personality development and career counselling programs.

While I am no expert on these subjects, I decided to try and share my learnings and experience from corporate life. I took up the assignment of grooming some of these students on etiquettes, personality improvement and positive traits. I also started sessions on basics of accounting and taxation, especially GST. I believe this will help open new avenues for them — after all the new taxation era has ushered a huge number of jobs for non-accountants. We are now trying to provide these students hands-on training on operating some common accounting and GST software.

This has been a novel experience for me and has brought me immense learning and satisfaction. It has allowed me to introspect and even understand my own shortcomings and has also taught me lessons on people management. Though I do not have any success stories to share yet, since it’s early days, I hope I will be able to influence someone’s life positively, and this is the motivation that drives me.
